Thirty-five people were arrested for trespassing at the Hyatt Regency Thursday afternoon during a protest against the Hyatt’s treatment of cleaning staff.
Approximately 200 union members and members of the public gathered to support the civil disobedience, and represent the “Hyatt 100,” the 98 Boston-area cleaning workers who were abruptly fired two years ago.

In a major show of support for the “Hyatt 100,” nurses from hospitals throughout metropolitan Boston will join the protest against the hotel chain. Thursday’s rally, which coincides with demonstrations in nine cities across the country, is part of the national outcry against the Hyatt corporation.

Several dozen nurses in bright blue smocks formed a noisy picket line along Lewis Bay Boulevard at Main Street in Hyannis May 19 in preparation for another round of union negotiations with Cape Cod Healthcare on Friday.
More than 900 nurses from Cape Cod and Falmouth hospitals, represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association, have been without a contract since October. The nurses’ three core grievances are insufficient staffing levels, excessive use of mandatory overtime and fair and equitable raises.

Holding signs that read “Safe Staffing Now, Protect Our Patients, and Mandatory Overtime is Unhealthy for Nurses and Patients,” registered nurses from Cape Cod and Falmouth Hospitals held an informational picket and rally outside the main entrance of Cape Hospital today to protest Cape Cod Health Care administration’s refusal to provide adequate RN staffing, safe working conditions and the resources needed to ensure patients receive quality patient care at these two facilities serving all of Cape Cod. A second picketing outside Falmouth Hospital is scheduled for Friday, May 20 from 2-5 p.m.

Our actions provide the hospital and the doctors with a stake in the game on who they actually contract to do electrical work at their facility. They will know the difference between contractors who provide health coverage for their workers, who ironically pay the doctors' bills and salaries, and contractors that provide no such health care at all for their workforce.

Doctors have become the prime targets in an electrical union's campaign to get Anna Jaques Hospital to automatically choose union contractors for a $15 million expansion project. A handful of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 103 have been holding signs in front of the hospital entrance for nearly a month, insisting that the hospital hire union workers who collect health insurance.
