US Department of Labor's OSHA proposes $354,000 in fines against recidivist Massachusetts contractor

A Hyde Park contractor with a long history of violating workplace safety standards faces a total of $354,000 in new proposed fines from the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, chiefly for exposing its employees to cave-in hazards at work sites in Cambridge and Framingham. Since 2000, P. Gioioso & Sons Inc., which is primarily engaged in the construction of underground water and sewer mains, had been cited seven times for repeat violations of OSHA's trenching and excavation safety standards prior to the citations resulting from these most recent inspections.

Deaths from prescription drug overdoses are spiraling out of control in the Boston area. The Ironworkers Local 7 is implementing a program of mandatory drug testing to help, which begins in September. “Our guys are tired of working on jobs where guys are messed up,” Jay Hurley, president of the New England Ironworkers’ Council and the former business manager of South Boston-based Local 7, said.

The University of Massachusetts Boston broke ground today on the first new academic building since the campus was completed in 1972. The building, a $152 million, 220,000-square-foot Integrated Sciences Complex, is being built at the entrance of the Columbia Point campus and will house state-of-the-art research, teaching, and training laboratories. The Building Trade Unions were recognized and thanked by Phil Johnston, UMass Board of Trustees, who thanked Frank Callahan, President of the Massachusetts Building Trades Council and said , “We made sure that organized labor was strongly represented. In the future years this will mean a lot of jobs made available for union members who need it and deserve it.”

This summer, MassDOT is replacing fourteen deteriorated bridge superstructures along I-93 in Medford, Massachusetts. This work would normally take about 5 years to complete. The combined effort of JF White & Kiewit Eastern using the highly skilled members of Massachusetts Building Trades Unions will finish this project in months not years.

A 41-year-old steelworker was flown to a Boston hospital after falling 30 feet at the site of the Rockland High School expansion project Monday afternoon. As he awaited the arrival of personnel from the federal Occupational Safety Health Administration, Rockland Fire Chief Scott Duffey said firefighters went to the site after receiving a 911 call.
