25 drivers and warehouse went on strike beginning last night against Sheila Marie Imports. These workers won an organizing drive at Sheila Marie Imports, who distribute high end Cheese to Stop and Shop, Shaw's and other supermarkets. During first contract negotiations, the company surface bargained and dropped last and final offer. These workers need support from all unions in a strike for a first contract.

Antonia Chun, a contracted janitor at the GE plant for twelve years recently fired for her union activities, said “After all these years of hard work, I was still making eight dollars an hour with no benefits. When the manager fired me, he said, ‘This is because you support the union.’ We are on strike because we will no longer be treated like the trash we clean.”

The registered nurses of Tufts Medical Center and St. Vincent Hospital, who are represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association, are both planning to hold a one-day strike on National Nurses Day, May 6, 2001 to protest dangerous patient care conditions at both facilities and to call for desperately needed improvements in RN staffing levels.

Striking workers at the Shaw’s supermarket warehouse in Methuen, Mass., are gaining the support of political, community and religious leaders and union members across New England. The 310 workers, members of Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 791, walked out March 7 after Shaw’s management demanded workers take on the full burden of paying increased costs for health care.

Thirty striking workers from Shaw's Methuen warehouse and their supporters descended on State Street Bank's downtown Boston headquarters to pressure its top executives to take a stand against Supervalu's (Shaw's parent company) refusal to end the nearly 14 week strike. State Street is the third largest shareholder in Supervalu.
