The prospect of a leaner but slower U.S. Postal Service troubles not just everyday patrons on the South Shore but also businesses that still rely on mail to lure customers into their stores.
“We’re spending more (to mail), and it’s taking longer. You wait in longer lines now,” said Hong Mullen as she left the Wollaston post office Tuesday afternoon. “It’s not good.”

The Wareham mail processing center, which employs about 100 workers, is among seven Massachusetts facilities on the list scheduled for closing next year. The other Massachusetts facilities targeted for closing are in Boston, Brockton, Lowell, North Reading, Shrewsbury and Waltham.

Three months ago, the United States Postal Service announced it would close 43 branches in Massachusetts, and both the East Watertown branch located at 589 Mt. Auburn St. and the New Town branch located at 123 Galen St. were on the list of branches being “studied” for closing.

A new proposal would move the handling of first-class mail away from the city's Indian Orchard plant to either Hartford or Worcester as part of a nationwide effort by the U.S. Postal Service to update with the times. But, many area union workers are very upset with the potential changes. "Service is part of our name, and we shouldn't be cutting service," said the President of the Springfield Postal Workers Union, Dan Kuralt.

The Postal Service’s plan would eliminate 160 union jobs and nine supervisor jobs from the Indian Orchard complexes that now employ about 1,200, according to unions representing many of those workers. The cuts could happen as soon as March, said Daniel R. Kuralt, president of Local 497 American Postal Workers Union.

Dozens of concerned residents squeezed into a meeting room at the Medford Public Library on Wednesday, Oct. 12, to oppose the potential closure of two Medford post offices. The U.S. Postal Service announced in July that it was considering closing about 3,700 branches across the country, including the West Medford and Tufts post offices.

Concerned residents, politicians and union members packed a public hearing Wednesday to voice their support for the West Medford and Tufts post office branches. Over 50 people turned out to the hearing, held by the U.S. Postal Service at the Magoun Room in Medford Public Library. The two branches are on a list of about 3,700 post offices nationwide the postal service is considering for closure.
