A Sharon husband and wife who own insulation companies in Rhode Island and Sharon, respectively, have been cited more than $58,000 in restitution and fines for failing to pay the prevailing wage, misclassifying workers as independent contractors, and record keeping violations, Attorney General Martha Coakley’s Office announced today. “All workers on public construction projects in the Commonwealth deserve to be paid what they are rightfully owed under the law, said AG Coakley. “Any employer that has a state or municipal contract must abide by the rules, which includes properly classifying their employees in their records.”

Quincy officials announced this week that city workers have agreed to a six-year extension of their health care plan, with employees now contributing 15 percent, up from 10 percent, of the cost of their premiums. City workers first entered into the Group Insurance Commission with the city three years ago, a process that as saved the city $35 million thus far, city officials said.

The Town Council ratified contracts for the firefighters union and Town Administrator Jeffrey Nutting last night. The contract with International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2637 covers fiscal 2008 through fiscal 2011 and gives members a 7.5 percent raise retroactive to July 1, 2010.

A Dedham construction company and its owner are required to pay more than $100,000 in restitution and penalties for failing to properly pay their employees and for misclassifying their workers, Attorney General Martha Coakley’s Office announced today. “At a time when many people are struggling financially, it is crucial that workers receive the wages they are rightfully owed,” AG Coakley said. “The independent contractor law is designed to ensure that all businesses are competing on a level playing field.”

According to the UWUA Local 369 officials, the union challenges a number of illegal work rules maintained by GenOn, including rules threatening potential termination of employees for initiating contact with the media or describing working conditions in blogs or social media. The union is also concerned about rules prohibiting the discussion of salaries, restrictions on posting information or distribution of literature for union support, a rule restricting the right of an employee to strike or protest and broad clothing and apparel policies.

Maryellen Bright, executive director of the South Shore Workforce Investment Board, said demand at career centers in Quincy and Plymouth has slowed since the recession's peak, but they remain quite busy.

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley announced on Friday that the president and secretary of Wrentham, Mass.-based construction company will pay over $226,000 for alleged violations of the state's wage and hour laws. Glen Pisani and Dana Pisani, the president and secretary of D.F.M. Industries Inc., will pay $160,000 in restitution and fines of $66,500 for allegedly failing to properly pay employees on multiple Massachusetts construction projects.
